Smoke Alarm & CO Detector Installation in Calgary

Working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are the difference between a close call and a tragedy. But beyond simply having them, Alberta's building code has specific requirements for how many you need, where they go, and whether they must be hardwired — requirements that many Calgary homeowners aren't aware of.

Sunshine Electric installs hardwired smoke alarms and CO detectors throughout Calgary, Cochrane, and Airdrie — properly located, interconnected, and fully compliant with the Alberta Building Code.

Alberta Building Code Requirements

Alberta Building Code Requirements for Smoke Alarms

In Alberta, smoke alarms are required by the Building Code in the following locations in every home:

  • On every storey of the home, including the basement

  • Outside every sleeping area (e.g., in the hallway adjacent to bedrooms)

  • Inside every bedroom (required in new construction and strongly recommended in existing homes)

All smoke alarms in new construction must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected — meaning when one alarm goes off, they all go off. This is critical because it gives you warning no matter where the fire starts, even if you're asleep on the other side of the house.

If you're renovating, selling, or simply want to make sure your home meets current standards, we'll assess your current setup and bring it up to code.

Alberta Building Code Requirements for CO Detectors

Carbon monoxide detectors are required in Alberta homes that have any of the following:

  • An attached or built-in garage

  • A fuel-burning appliance (furnace, boiler, fireplace, gas stove, water heater)

  • A wood-burning fireplace or stove

CO detectors must be installed on each storey and outside each sleeping area. Carbon monoxide is odourless and colourless — you cannot detect it without an alarm. It's one of the most common causes of accidental poisoning deaths in Canada, and the risk is highest in winter when homes are sealed tight and furnaces run continuously.

What We Offer

  • New hardwired smoke alarm installation — We install hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms in the correct locations throughout your home to meet Alberta Building Code.

  • CO detector installation — We install hardwired CO detectors near sleeping areas and on every storey, properly positioned according to code.

  • Smoke alarm replacement — We replace old, expired, or battery-only alarms with modern hardwired units with battery backup.

  • Combination smoke/CO alarms — For a cleaner installation, we can install combination units that detect both smoke and carbon monoxide, reducing the total number of devices needed.

  • New construction and renovation wiring — We rough-in and complete the alarm wiring on new builds and renovations, coordinating with your timeline.

  • Code compliance assessment — Not sure if your home meets current Alberta requirements? We'll do a walkthrough and tell you exactly what's needed.

How Much Does Smoke Alarm Installation Cost in Calgary?

Smoke alarm and CO detector installation costs in Calgary depend on how many units are needed and whether your home is already wired for hardwired alarms. Typical ranges:

  • Single hardwired smoke alarm installation: $150–$550

  • Full home smoke alarm system (hardwired, interconnected): $600–$1,500 depending on home size

  • CO detector installation: $170–$250 per unit

  • Combination smoke/CO alarm installation: $200–$300 per unit

We provide an upfront quote before any work begins. No hidden fees.

Hardwired vs. Battery-Operated Alarms — What's the Difference?

Battery-operated alarms are plug-and-play — no electrician needed. However, they rely entirely on the battery, which can fail without warning, and they don't communicate with each other (when one goes off, the others stay silent).

Hardwired alarms are connected to your home's electrical system with a battery backup. They're interconnected so all alarms sound together when one detects smoke or CO. They're required by Alberta Building Code in new construction and are the recommended standard for any home.

If your home has older battery-only alarms, or if your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old, we recommend upgrading to a hardwired interconnected system. It's one of the highest-value safety upgrades you can make.

When Should You Replace Your Smoke Alarms?

Smoke alarms have a limited lifespan and must be replaced even if they appear to be working. Here's the guidance:

Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years from the manufacture date (printed on the back of the unit). CO detectors should be replaced every 5–7 years. If your alarms chirp constantly even with fresh batteries, that's often a sign they've reached end of life and need replacement — not just new batteries.

Many Calgary homes we visit have alarms that are 15–20 years old. If you're not sure how old yours are, check the manufacture date on the back. If there's no date or you can't find it, replace them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many smoke alarms do I need in my Calgary home?

  • Alberta Building Code requires at least one smoke alarm on every storey (including the basement), and one outside every sleeping area. Alarms inside each bedroom are required for new construction and strongly recommended for existing homes. Most average-sized Calgary homes need 4–6 alarms to be fully compliant.

Are CO detectors required by law in Alberta?

  • Yes. Alberta's Fire Code requires CO detectors in homes with attached garages or fuel-burning appliances. Given that virtually every Calgary home has a furnace and most have an attached garage, CO detectors are effectively required in almost every home.

My smoke alarm keeps beeping — do I need to replace it?

  • Constant chirping with fresh batteries usually means the alarm has reached the end of its service life (10 years for smoke alarms) and needs to be replaced, not just given new batteries. Check the manufacture date on the back of the unit.

Can I install smoke alarms myself in Calgary?

  • Battery-operated alarms can be self-installed. However, hardwired alarms require an electrician — they connect to your home's wiring and must be installed to code. If you're replacing old hardwired units with new ones of the same type, that's generally a straightforward job for a licensed electrician.

What's the difference between ionization and photoelectric smoke alarms?

  • Ionization alarms respond faster to fast-flaming fires. Photoelectric alarms respond faster to slow, smouldering fires — which are actually more common in residential settings. Alberta Fire Code accepts both types. For the best protection, we recommend photoelectric alarms or combination units. We're happy to advise on the right type for your home.

Do interconnected alarms need to be the same brand?

  • Hardwired interconnected alarms generally need to be compatible with each other — in most cases this means the same brand. When we install or replace a system, we ensure all units are compatible so they communicate properly.

My home was built in the 1990s — am I up to code for smoke alarms?

  • Probably not fully. Homes built before the late 2000s often don't meet current Alberta code requirements for alarm placement, interconnection, or age. We can do a quick assessment and tell you exactly what needs to be updated.
